A Resource for Writers Rappers Poets and Lyricists is a new kind of dictionary one that reflects the use of rhythm rhymes by rappers poets and songwriters of today This is an eminently practical reference work for all wordsmiths looking to add musicality to their writing Users of this dictionary can alphabetically look up words in the General Index to find collections of words that have the same rhythm as the original word and are readily useable in ways that are familiar to us in everything from vers libre poetry to the lyrics and music of Bob Dylan and hip hop groups Professional writers and students have long used traditional rhyming dictionaries for inspiration by perusing lists of rhyming words they may ask themselves I need a word that rhymes with blue and are led to shoe flu or you These rhyming words evoke through juxtaposition new images thoughts and actions that inspire creative directions and pleasing twists as verses and stanzas unfold For the first time ever this dictionary now allows writers and poets to ask the same question but of word rhythm I need a word with the same rhythm as butterfly Today s lyricists and poets know that there is so much more to the flow of their creations than just matching vowels Music and speech in air and text on a page flow and stream through time layered on steady or shifting meters and tempos often aligning accented syllables with beats or syncopating off the beat Long words sometimes suddenly accelerate to preserve this flow while short ones may be dangled between crisp short silences to satisfy an implied pulse These conveyed and felt grooves are established to help the listener parse and understand messages both the explicit grammars and meanings and the subtle emotional yet crucial expressions sent through a sly turn of pitch or an abrupt shift in tone The art of flow is the art of rhythm and this dictionary provides new pallets of words aligned in rhythm for the crafting and laying of stanzas and lines of prose by writers rappers poets and lyricists Poetry is the rhythmical creation of beauty in words - Edgar Allan Poe To live is to be musical starting with the blood dancing in your veins Everything living has a rhythm Do you feel your music - Michael Jackson Rhythm is something you either have or don t have but when you have it you have it all over - Elvis Presley Introduction xii What Are Rhythm Rhymes Rhythm Rhymes are two or more words with the same rhythm Rhythm Rhymes have the same number of syllables and relative positions of primarily accented secondarily accented and unstressed syllables Words that are Rhythm Rhymes need not have matching vowel sounds as traditional rhymes do Clashing and splashing are Rhythm Rhymes because both words have the same number of syllables 2 syllables and primary stresses on the first syllables CLASHing and SPLASH-ing For the same reasons bacon and fortune are also Rhythm Rhymes BA-con and FOR-tune even though their vowels differ So in fact all four of these words are Rhythm Rhymes with each other CLASH-ing SPLASH-ing BA-con FORT-une and they are all found in 2-Syllable Words Rhythm Rhyme Group 2 in this dictionary along with many other rhythmically matching words Again words with identical placements of syllabic accents are Rhythm Rhymes Although splashing and enjoy both have two syllables they are not Rhythm Rhymes because the first syllable is accented in SPLASH-ing while the second syllable is accented en-JOY However en-JOY and a-BOUT are Rhythm Rhymes because they both have accented second syllables and unstressed first syllables Rhythm Rhymes abound in poetry and lyrics and many other forms of writing Here s one example from a well-known song My country tis of thee Sweet land of liberty Of thee I sing Land where my fathers died Land of the Pilgrims pride From ev ry mountain side Let freedom ring The two words at the ends of the last four lines are Rhythm Rhymes FAthers PILgrims MOUN- tain FREE- dom DIED PRIDE SIDE RING A New Kind of Dictionary xiii How Do I Use This Dictionary Method 1 Think of a word and browse a list of words with identical rhythms As writers poets and lyricists write they often Kind of Dictionary xvii More About Rhythm Rhyme Groups Words Within Rhythm Rhyme Groups Are Arranged by Sound Similarity Each Rhythm Rhyme Group is a collection of words with the same number of syllables and rhythm accents Instead of being alphabetically ordered however words within each group are arranged by how they sound They are sorted by rhyming vowel sounds with the vowels at the end of the word being weighted more than vowels in earlier syllables If several words have identical vowel sounds they are further sorted by consonant sounds The groups are arranged this way because poets and lyricists often make use of similar sounding words through the use of alliteration assonance and consonance Plus Sign Indicates Existence of Alternate Rhythmic Pronunciations of Words Many words have alternate pronunciations For example protest can be pronounced PRO-test or pro-TEST These types of words are duplicated in multiple Rhythm Rhyme Groups and signs are added at the ends of words to indicate that alternate rhythmic pronunciations exist such as in PROTEST When a user wishes to find the alternate rhythmic pronunciation the word is looked up in the General Index which lists page
